Mattress Construction

The Helix Midnight is a memory foam hybrid bed with 3 layers of foam plus a coil-based support core. This means it can be 12 inches high! Helix has designed a new mattress, the Helix Mattress, which I’ll take you through to see how it works. Let’s start with the casing and work our way through in order.

Cover- all Helix mattresses ship with the Helix Soft Touch cover. This cover is soft to the touch, good-looking and stretchy. It also has a zipper so you can remove it for machine washing whenever it needs it!

Helix says this cover is optimized to improve airflow, however it doesn’t sleep as cool as some other pads on the market. Luckily, Helix replacement covers are affordable and easy to install. The latter uses a phase-changing material to boost efficiency and has been engineered for comfort.

Comfort layer- The Midnight mattress starts with a 2-inch layer of memory foam, sourced from Helix’s bespoke memory foam and material. This is a critical component for the functionality of this mattress as it provides excellent support. It’s known for great cradling relief- with a pressure-relieving tone, soft sinkage, and whole body contouring that syncs with key body pressure points.

Transition layer- the second layer is a thinner slab of high-grade polyfoam. This type of foam absorbs sinkage and provides excellent ergonomic support and comfort.

Support layer- this layer is responsible for any changes you’ll experience with foam mattresses. It includes hundreds of individually pocketed coils that give this mattress a lot of bounce and responsiveness, which makes changing positions effortless. With these coils, the edge support of this mattress is boosted and it’s even more comfortable to sleep on. There’s also not a better cradling effect for pressure relief since it so soft.

Base layer- the high density foam that the Helix mattress is made of is comfortably firm and will not sink in like other models. The design on the foam layer provides a base for the coil support system as well as make it sturdier than most other mattresses.

To summarize, the Helix Midnight is well designed and there’s barely anything to question. If you’re switching from an innerspring or foam mattress, you should find the Midnight very different for many reasons. This is due to its reduced motion transfer and breathability.

The Helix Midnight Mattress

Sleeping Positions

Side sleeping

The experts at Helix (the main website for this mattress manufacturer) recommend the Midnight mainly for side sleepers. This tallies with the consensus opinion of it among our staff. This mattress is on the softer side, delivering excellent support for your shoulders and hips. There is still enough pressure relief to make you comfortable.

Back sleeping

The Sleep America Mattress will work well for most back sleepers weighing 300 lbs or below. Your hips and shoulders will sink in just the right amount, and you’ll find that it’s the perfect balance of firmness and softness. I have to say, this is without a doubt the best mattress I’ve found for back-sleeping.

Stomach sleeping

Front sleepers who are 250lbs and below will most likely experience legit support from this mattress. That said, people who weigh around 250lbs or less are the ones who will benefit the most. If you go above that, the mattress may not provide enough pressure to push your midsection back. This may misalign your spine, creating new pressure injury points or aggravating the existing ones.

We expect the Midnight Mattress to impress customers across all sleeping positions. That said, those who weigh 250lbs or more might want to consider a tighter option.

Firmness Review

This mattress is medium-firm, meaning it falls in the 4-6 range on the firmness scale (1 being cloud-soft and 10 being firmest). It should be comfortable for most people and should accommodate both petit to medium size individuals. Our team loves how this mattress is constructed, with a secret level of support that only starts to show after lying on it for a few seconds. For those who love the feel of pure memory foam, this is the perfect bed for you. But it’s nothing overwhelming and those who dislike feeling too much pressure will be happy with the result, as they won’t feel excessive foam on their body.

Value for the Money

The Helix Midnight is one of the most popular mattresses that we offer. Among things people like best, they note its incredible responsiveness, durability, and pressure-relief. Additionally, this mattress is well-balanced with respect to comfort–so whether you prefer more sinking or more upright support, it would be a viable option for you. A strong point of Helix is its ability to include a cooling pad on the cover, as well as its low price. We think they have succeeded with these aspects.

Overall

The Helix Midnight has been soaring in popularity lately. We are happy to say that we were the first store to offer it! It’s a reasonably priced, medium-firm hybrid mattress that’s comfortable, supportive and also very satisfying. The mattress is perfect for people of a small or average height that overheat while in bed. Couples will also love its motion isolation, average bounce, low noise level and excellent cooling abilities.
