Transition layer - Next comes a layer of foam that is 3 inches thick. This foam absorbs the body’s weight and helps prevent you from sinking or feeling too squished. At the surface, this dense foam layer allows you to feel confident for longer periods of time. But a closer look reveals a thoughtfully engineered transition layer with zoned regions to provide targeted support and pressure relief to the sleeper. It’s softer around the head and feet for adequate pressure relief but firmer around the lower back for improved spinal alignment.
Foundation layer - There’s a 7" layer of Contourfoam at the sleeper’s back that provides support to the mattress. This is similar to what most all-foam mattresses have in them. This layer consists of high-density polyurethane. Its role is to provide support to the other layers and keep your spine aligned. It’s durability edge support are also noticeably better than traditional foams.

Side sleeping - The first layer is the softer-than-average comfort layer. Firmness Review
The Molecule springs are medium to medium-firm when fully unholstered. You’ll feel softer than average in the early stages before the firmer transition layer and support core provide excellent pressure relief and response. Based on our experience and on what 1-10 firmness scale, our reviewers have deemed that this mattress is between 6 and 6.5 on that scale. Softness will be subjective - of course, the Molecule 1 may be firmer or softer depending on your weight.
